The New Car Test Drive

The New Car Test Drive
The test drive should be used to determine if you would like to own the vehicle. Many times this step is overlooked by hard-core Internet price shoppers. However, it is critical. It is a waste of everyone’s time to gather information on a car that you later decide you do not wish to buy. Please keep in mind, this guide book is meant to help deliver a great price on a car that you would like to own.

The challenge of the test drive is having the right car available to drive. That is why it is so important to scheduled and reconfirm the appointment.

During the test drive, you will normally be accompanied by a salesman.  Usually the salesman will drive the vehicle off the lot, claiming insurance policy restrictions (this is not necessary true, but it doesn’t matter.).  Keep in mind, the customer should remember they are not the owners of the car yet, and should not to “race” the engine or abuse the vehicle in anyway. Many times, the customer’s bad behavior on the test drive will impede their ability to secure desired information and later a good price.

For the most part, the salesman will be quiet during the drive and respond only to your questions. They may attempt some sales strategies, like they may have you drive it to your house to see if it fits in your garage to create “mental ownership”, (see the article on How Car Salesman Use Ether to Sell Cars).  Mostly, the salesman will want the car to create the excitement.  Therefore, when you get back from the drive, they can move to the “Write-Up” step.
